Ravenna
was the capital of the Western Roman Empire and afterwards
was governed by the Goths of Theodoric and by the Byzantines.
Now, like more than 1000 years ago, its mosaics can
be seen on the walls of important monuments: the mausoleum
of Galla Placidia, the basilicas of S. Vitale, S. Apollinare
in Classe and S. Apollinare Nuovo, the baptisteries
"Neoniano" and "degli Ariani" and
other masterpieces such as the Loggetta Lombardesca
and Santa Maria del Suffragio.
The "Ravenna Festival" and "Mosaic by
Night", with the evening opening of the main monuments,
are only two of the great performances that take place
in the city.
In the hinterland, Faenza, is well known for the production
of artistic ceramics.
Among the local specialities
there are "Piadina" and first courses like
"passatelli in brodo", "garganelli",
"strozzapreti" and "cappelletti"
with cheese. The most popular main courses are based
on grilled fish and mutton.
